APMEX offers a superb selection of Liberty Seated half dollars.
Introduced in 1839, the half dollar was the last denomination to bear the Liberty Seated design. Sculpted by Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features Liberty seated upon a rock, holding a shield in her right hand, symbolic of national readiness. Her left hand holds aloft a pole topped with a liberty cap, symbolic of American freedom. The series ran from 1839 until 1891. There are several distinct varieties in this series: No Motto, Arrows at Date with Rays, Arrows at Date without Rays, Motto Above Eagle, and Arrows at Date. In 1861, the US Mint at New Orleans was commandeered by Confederate forces after Louisiana seceded from the Union. It continued to strike US coinage and that money helped to fuel the Confederacy during the early days of the war.
