APMEX offers a superb selection of both Large Size and Small Size National Bank Notes.
First issued in 1863, National Bank Notes were used in all 48 states and the territories of Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico until 1935. These notes were printed in $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 denominations. There are numerous Large Size notes having been printed in 1863, 1875, 1882, 1902 and 1908, in Three Charter Periods. The Small Size notes were issued in two types, from 1929 to 1935.
Under Abraham Lincoln, Secretary of the Treasury Salmon Portland Chase though of a system of nationally chartered banks. Individual banks purchased U.S. government bonds and deposited them with the comptroller. For up to 90% of the profit, the comptroller would authorize the production of notes with the individual bank’s name.
