Tokens and medals are emcompassed in a category called "EXONUMIA". These items, while not coins, are avidly collected. Used in place of coins, tokens have a denomination shown or implied by their size, shape or color. True tokens before 1932 were often made of cheaper materials such as copper, pewter, aluminum, brass and tin.
The key difference between tokens and coins is that a coin is issued by a local or national authority and is exchangeable for goods or other coins, while a token has a more limited use and is often issued by a private company, group, association or individual. Coins has a specific denominational value and can be widely exchanged and accepted everywhere.
Some of the most important types of tokens and medals are Civil War Tokens, Political Tokens, Hard Times Tokens, SO-Called Dollars, Official US Mint medals, and Love Tokens, though that listing is not all inclusive.
