North Africa Notes

APMEX offers a fine selection of North Africa notes.

Beginning November 8th, 1942, the joint invasion of French North Africa by British and American Troops known as Operation Torch brought with it the specially marked currency today referred to as North Africa Notes. For the same reasons which spurred the creation of the Hawaii Notes, these series 1934 and 1935, $1, $5, and $10 Silver Certificates served America’s fighting forces throughout the region including Italy until September 1st, 1945.

These Emergency Notes are distinguished only by a yellow seal instead of the blue seal of the standard Silver Certificates. Like the Hawaii Notes, the only signature combination is Julian and Morgenthau.
