Though Canadian coinage greatly parallels that of the U.S. in several aspects, Canadian coins stand apart as its own separate entity as well. Canadian coins are widely collected in the U.S.—particularly the northern states, where they readily available, sometimes in circulation!

The first provincial coins to circulate were the 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents and 20 cents, issued in 1858. However, the first Dominion of Canada coinage was released over a decade later in 1870 with 5, 10, 25 and 50 cent pieces.
