Hawaii Notes

APMEX offers a fine selection of Hawaii Notes.

During World War II, the safety of U.S. currency circulating throughout the Hawaiian Islands was a more predominant concern among many the country was forced to consider. In July of 1942 a specially-marked currency was introduced. This currency provided an economic defense in the event of the islands’ occupation—substantial amounts of U.S. currency could have tipped the scales in favor of the Japanese in numerous ways.

These Emergency Notes—$1 Silver Certificates and $5, $10 and $20 Federal Reserve Notes of San Francisco—are distinguished by the overprint of Hawaii. Additionally, the seals and serial numbers of these notes were printed in brown ink, and the only signature combination was Julian and Morgenthau.

Hawaii Notes were the only paper currency allowed to circulate in Hawaii from August 14th, 1942 until October 21st, 1944.
