2, 3 and 20 Cents

APMEX offers a superb selection of 2-cent bronze pieces, 3-cent silver pieces and 3-cent nickel pieces.

Issued in 1864, the 2-Cent Piece has the distinction of being the first coin to bear the inscription “In God We Trust.” During the Civil War crisis, Americans on both sides of that war increasingly were more open about their religious beliefs, so that motto addition was readily accepted. One of the most interesting coins in this series is the 1864 issue. There are both Small and Large Motto varieties. The Small Motto is significantly rarer than the Large Motto variety, being worth more than 10 times the price of the Large Motto, even in only Good condition. They were minted between 1864 and 1873.

Having been minted between 1851 and 1873, the 3-Cent Silver is the smallest of all U.S. silver coins. It is commonly called a 'trime.'It features a 6-pointed star on the obverse upon which a shield is engraved. The reverse depicts the Roman Numeral "III" for the value. Although relatively short-lived, there are three distinct types of 3-cent silvers all having to do with the numbers of lines bordering the 6-pointed star.

The 3-Cent Nickel piece was created in 1865 to replace the silver version, although they were both minted during the 1865 to 1873 period. The 3-Cent Nickel pieces continued until 1889. These pieces were not widely accepted and minting was discontinued in 1889. The 1877, 1878 and 1886 issues were only struck in Proof condition, intended for collectors, since the public demand was so weak.
