Before they were revealed to the public in 1964, millions of GSA Silver Dollar coins had been lying undiscovered in the U.S. Treasury vaults for decades. Beginning in 1972, the coins were dispersed by the General Services Administration in a series of eight sales limited to citizens of the U.S. Two additional sales known as the “GSA Hoard Sales” followed in 1980.
Two separate types of these silver coins were discovered. The most common type featured Morgan Dollars with the Carson City, Nevada mint mark. The other was rare and composed of Morgans minted outside of Carson City.
