Roman coinage can be divided into two parts:
Roman Republic 280 – 41 BC
Roman Empire 27 BC – 491 AD
The first Roman silver coins, the Didrachms, were struck around 280 BC along with cast bronze Aes Grave. The pre-Denarius silver coins, 280 BC to 211 BC, were called Didrachms. The Coin Reform of 211 BC made the Denarius the main silver coin and the Aes the main bronze coin.
The coins of the Roman Empire began with the first Emperor Augustus in 41 BC. The main coins being the silver Denarius and the bronze As. These splendid old coins were de-based over the years, and in 215 AD the double Denarius, named Antoninianus, was issued.
Coins of the Roman Empire usually have the portrait of the emperor or the empress on the obverse, while the reverse depicts a god, goddess or military theme .
A good way to collect Roman Imperial coins is by the portrait of the emperors. Most 4th century Roman coins are very inexpensive, and this is a good place to start your Roman coin collection.
