Prior to the Civil War, paper currency wasn’t issued by the U.S. government. Instead it was issued by thousands of different banks and companies. Many of these banks failed, or were fraudulent from the start, resulting in bank notes that were worthless. These are called both "obsolete notes" or "broken bank notes."
Obsolete currency is extremely popular among currency collectors and dealers. This series is highlighted by unusual denominations such as $3 notes, and by notes that even depict the coins of the day. There are thousands of different and unique designs of obsolete notes, all of which adds to their allure.
Many people collect obsolete notes from their state or even their own hometown. Or they collect notes from unusual places. Is your hometown listed here?
All of our notes are shipped in archival quality holders.
For your convenience, all of our OBSOLETE notes on this page are listed in by STATE. They are then listed by Haxby, Criswell or other reference number.
