Reeded Edge Half Dollars (1836-1839)

APMEX offers a superb selection of Reeded Edge half dollars.

Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Reeded Edge Half Dollars are among the first U.S. coins made for circulation on the new steam press of 1836. The obverse features the portrait of Liberty, while the reverse depicts an American eagle clutching a cluster of arrows and an olive branch in its talons, symbolic of war and peace. This very short-lived type was first minted in 1836 but discontinued in 1839.
