The Mamluks, successors to Saladin, were descendants of slaves trained to be soldiers. The Mamluks succeeded to the Ayyubid Dynasty in 1250 AD. In 1250 AD, the Mamluks captured the French King Louis IX (Saint Louis) and held him for ransom. In 1260 AD, the Mamluks defeated the Mongols at the battle of Ain Jalut in Galilee. One of the few to defeat the Mongols.
