Pattern Coinage
Pattern Coins are the "highest form of the engraver's art!"

While pattern coinage was designed between 1795 and the current day, the heyday for Patterns was between the years 1850 and 1891. During that period, US Mint Chief Engraver William Barber engaged in a "Pattern War" with George T. Morgan, one of his Assistants and a future Chief Engraver. These two success-driven men battled each other to see who was more prolific and could generate the most pattern coinage.

Patterns truly are an exciting area of numismatics to collect! The diversity of designs and metals used makes for some very interesting coins. Although these specimens rarely are available for sale in high grade and the numbers of surving examples are extremely small, they occasionally do become available for sale and when they do APMEX is very proud to offer them.

These are the "coins that never were!"
