Mid-Day Gold & Silver Market Report – 4/1/2011

STOCKS RALLY, GOLD DIPS

Stocks soar to an almost three-year high following the information that U.S. employers added 216,000 jobs and the unemployment rate dropped again. “The jobs report confirms that the U.S. economy is recovering in a slow grinding upwards move,” said Stephen Wood, the New York-based chief market strategist for Russell Investments, which manages $155 billion. All of this activity has strengthened the U.S. dollar while pulling investors away from the precious metals markets.

We are also seeing another spike in crude oil pricing as investors keep a watchful eye. “The price of oil can hinge on a number of factors: the political climate in the Middle East and North Africa, a natural disaster, such as a hurricane or earthquake, or the dollar’s motions in the course of a single day. One wrong move and the price of oil can swing by double digits,” said Tom Lyndon, president of Global Trends Investments and editor of ETF trends. Many of the same factors apply to precious metals, but for different reasons. With gold and silver, investors look to the safe-haven appeal precious metals offer in times of economic or geopolitical turmoil.

At 12PM (CT) the APMEX precious metals spot prices were:

  • Gold - $1,427.30 (down $12.60 on the day)
  • Silver - $37.80 (down $0.16)
  • Platinum - $1,757.00 (down $24.30)
  • Palladium - $774.70 (up $5.80)
