The Perth Mint presents its first 1 oz Silver Proof Holey Dollar & Dump Set to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Emulating the format of Australia's first coinage (Gov. Macquarie's famous Holey Dollar and Dump), the set features a new Australian Lunar Design. Struck from 1 oz of 99.9% pure Silver in Proof quality, each set is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. The limited mintage reflects the belief held in Chinese Feng Shui that the number 8 represents prosperity and abundance. The reverse of the Holey Dollar depicts the 12 animals associated with China's ancient lunar calendar. According to legend, the animals exert a profound effect on people born under the period of each animal's influence. Legend says the animals raced for the honor of representing the first year. The winner was the rat, followed by the ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. The reverse of the gold-plated Dump is inscribed with the words "LUNAR NEW YEAR 2007" and "GOOD FORTUNE & PROSPERITY," which surround Chinese characters meaning Happy New Year. The obverses of the Holey Dollar and Dump depict the Raphael Maklouf and Ian Rank-Broadley likenesses of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II respectively. Each coin is housed in a red presentation case, which comes in a highly illustrated shipping sleeve.
