Trade Dollars were issued for circulation in the Orient. They were minted to compete with dollar-sized coins from other countries that also freely circulated there. Often times they are found with Chinese characters impressed into the coin. They are known as 'chopmarks' and they were added to the coin by Chinese merchants to attest to the fineness. This beautiful example is graded as MS63 by NGC.
