These large (25 to 30mm) bronze follis of the Byzantine Empire are of various dates and Emperors. They range in condition from Good to Fine and dating from the 5th to the 15th century. The Byzantine Empire lasted for almost a thousand years after the fall of the Roman Empire in the West. It's capitol, Constantinople (present day Istanbul, Turkey), was founded by Constantine the Great in 324 AD and fell to the Turks in 1453 AD. Byzantine coins form a bridge between the Ancient and Mediaeval worlds developing a style of their own over their thousand year run. |
