This 5 kilo (160.75 troy ounces) .999-fine Silver coin from the British Virgin Islands was issued to pay tribute to Danish-born explorer Vitus Bering. After serving in the Russian Navy, Czar Peter I asked Bering to command the first Kamchatka expedition. The goal of this expedition was to determine how far the Siberian mainland actually extended into the Pacific Ocean, since much of the world was uncharted and it was unknown whether Asia and North America were connected or were separate land masses. His discovery that they are in fact separate is evidenced in the geographic places named for him such as the Bering Strait, Bering Sea, and others.

The obverse of this coin has the usual likeness of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse displays one of Bering's ships between Russia and America with his name, dates of birth and death, and the coin's value below. Also embedded into the reverse are a functional thermometer and compass! Comes with a handsome wood display case and certificate of authenticity from the Pobjoy Mint.
