First Year of Issue! The 1839 $5.00 Gold Half Eagle was the first year of issue for this particular design, designed by Christian Gobrecht. It had replaced the Classic head design of the past 5 years. This new design remained unchanged for 27 years until 1866 when the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the Reverse. This coin is also known as the Coronet or Braided Hair Type and became the gold standard for designs of the 19th century as the designs were also used for the $2.50 quarter eagle and $10 eagle as well. Its Obverse went unchanged for nearly 70 years when it was replaced by Bela Lyon Pratt's Indian Head. This coin has nice even wear and is a good coin for filling a hole or starting a collection. It is always nice to have the first year of issue at a reasonable price.
