This example has been graded VG10 by NGC. The famous Huge O quarter has a crude oversized mintmark. Experts speculate that a reverse die was mistakenly shipped to New Orleans without the mintmark, and a worker at the Southern facility hand-engraved the O onto the exergue of the reverse die.
This circulated example bears a deeply impressed G.W. CAPRON counterstamp on the Seated Liberty, placed vertically between the head and the rock. There is research that this counterstamp maker, whose moniker appears on numerous antebellum O-mint silver coins, was a jeweler in Houston, Texas around this time.
