This coin is the second in the Kiwi Treasures series that combines New Zealand’s national bird with iconic treasures of nature. The 2013 issue features the mighty Tane Mahuta, New Zealand’s largest living kauri tree believed to be between 1,500 and 2,000 years old. Tane Mahuta is Maori for “Lord of the Forest,” a fitting name for a tree that stretches nearly 150 feet above the forest floor.
The Waipoua Forest is home to both the majestic Tane Mahuta and the endangered kiwi. Both are pictured beautifully in frosty three-dimensional relief with a Proof mirrorlike background on this stunning 1/4 oz Gold coin. The profile of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse. Minted from .9999-fine Gold, this Kiwi Treasures coin is limited to a worldwide mintage of just 950 coins and comes complete in commemorative packaging.
Maori legend tells about Tane and his many brothers who lived in a world of darkness because their parents, the Earth Mother Papa-tu-a-nuku and the Sky Father Ranginui, were in a constant embrace that would not let light in. Tane put his shoulders on the ground and pressed his feet to the sky, separating his mother from his father and letting light into the world.
