This Proof Gold 50 Euro coin, which is made of .920 Gold, commemorates the 40th anniversary of mans first steps on the moon. The United Nations declared 2009 the International Year of Astronomy. The event coincided with the 400th anniversary of the first recorded astronomical observations through a telescope by Galileo Galilei.
The obverse is a clouded finish that creates the background of the night sky with stars and Saturn in view. Around the outer ring of the coin are the 12 signs of the zodiac. The reverse features a rough image of the surface of the moon with a mirrored footprint to represent the historic walk on the moon of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Each of these beautiful Gold coins comes in a box and with a certificate of authenticity.
