Pros 1. With the silver content of 0.6 pure troy ounces per dollar coin, it easier to do math without breaking out a calculator to figure out 0.7734 for US coinage. 2. Canadian legal tender status 3. As I write, the lowest premium on these is $0.79 over spot per pure ounce where similar condition US dollar coins are sold at $6 per oz over. Even the US dollar mega-culls are being sold for $3+ over. Granted the US dollar coins are older, but it seems like a reasonable speculation that premiums on these Canadian dollars could move up in the future. This is the main reason why I would prefer these over the bulk generic 80% Canadian coinage even though that option is cheaper. Cons 1. The main drawback is that 80% silver purity is low relative to US 90% or of course 999 bullion. This will add some bulk which might be unwanted and will make them less attractive to a refiner. You may be able to get cheaper prices on 40% halves and war nickels, but those are of too low purity to consider in my opinion. 2. Probably less understood and recognized for their silver in the U.S. although Pro.1 might counteract this. Conclusion I wouldn't want to own these as my sole form of silver, but to me they offer some compelling advantages as part of a diversifying approach in the physical silver space.
