The Fantastic Queen’s Beasts Series Minted by The Royal Mint

Queen's Beasts Series Coins

When Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was crowned on June 2, 1953, 10 heraldic beast statues stood guard at the ceremony, representing the different houses joining in Her Majesty’s royal ancestry. Present that day in plaster form were the Lion of England, the Griffin of Edward III, the Red Dragon of Wales, the White Greyhound of Richmond and the Black Bull of Clarence. Also in “attendance” were the Falcon of the Plantagenets, the Yale of Beaufort, the White Lion Mortimer, the White Horse of Hanover and the Unicorn of Scotland. Today, the original Queen's Beasts plaster statues used at the coronation can be found at the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec, while stone replicas watch over Kew Gardens just outside of London.

The Royal Mint is celebrating the Queen’s Beasts with a series of 10 Gold and Silver coins designed by the renowned Jody Clark. Each design features a 2 oz Silver bullion coin along with 1/4 oz and 1 oz .9999 Gold bullion coins. The series debuted in early 2016 with the Lion of England, followed by the Griffin of Edward III. The first release in 2017 is the fantastic Red Dragon of Wales, featuring the beast clutching a shield adorned with dragons. The reverse is also surrounded by the name, weight and purity along with the initials “JC” for its designer.

The obverse of these coins bears the fifth official coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by the text "ELIZABETH II • D • G • REG • F • D • (5/25/100) POUNDS".  The letters “DG REG FD” is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase "Dei Gratia Regina Fidei Defensor", which translates to "Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith". The initials of the artist Jody Clark appear just below the portrait. The griffin is an ancient mythical beast. It was considered a beneficent creature, signifying courage and strength, and was closely associated with Edward III, who chose it for his private seal. The Red Dragon was a symbol used by Owen Tudor, after the story of the dragon on Llewelyn the Last's castle grounds. These are just two of the royal lines represented in the person of Her Majesty.
