$5.00 Half Eagles (Indian 1908 - 1929)
$5 Indian Head Half Eagles - These smaller denomination coins circulated widely throughout the United States. Additionally, the unique beauty, complex design and high demand distinguish the Indian Head Half Eagle from other gold coins. These coins have proved themselves to be resilient through time and are now pieces of American history.
The obverse features a Native American chief of unknown name and tribe, while the reverse depicts the proud image of an American eagle. Beneath the eagle’s talons is a cluster of arrows and an olive branch, symbolic of war and peace. This is only one of two coins with a sunken-relief design and lettering ever produced by the U.S. Mint.
These coins were minted and distributed as currency before President Franklin Roosevelt required Americans to turn in their Gold coins to be melted into bars to help combat the Great Depression. The recall of Gold made these coins that were previously very common, a rare find. Combining the age, historical value and the uniqueness of the sunken-relief design, these coins are a sure way to add value to any collection or investment portfolio.
