$2.50 Quarter Eagles (Liberty 1840 - 1907)
$2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagles - These smaller denomination coins circulated widely throughout the United States in the days when they were commonly used as currency. Created by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Quarter Eagle’s design remained unchanged for 33 years, longer than any other design in the history of American Gold coinage. These coins are a desirable addition to any investment portfolio or numismatic collection because of their age and history.
The obverse features Lady Liberty facing the viewer’s left surrounded by 13 small stars, with the date below. The reverse depicts an American eagle clutching an olive branch and a cluster of arrows in its talons. The mintmark can be found on the reverse below the eagle.
These coins were used as currency before President Franklin Roosevelt required Americans to turn in their Gold coins to be melted into bars to help combat the Great Depression. The recall of Gold made these coins a rare find. Now, the surviving coins are sought after by collectors and investors alike.
