Gold Elephant Series (Somalia)

Gold Elephant Series (Somalia)

New Gold Elephant coin every year

Featuring a new design released each year, the Gold Elephant coin series continues to fascinate collectors. Each Gold Elephant coin captures the beauty and grace of earth’s largest land mammals. Since 1999, coin designs have included one or more African elephants exploring their natural habitat, roaming the Sahara, drinking from natural pools and gathering in families. These brilliant uncirculated 1 troy oz coins are renowned for their luster, design detail and .9999 Gold purity.

Gold Elephant coin’s German origin

Part of the Gold Elephant coin’s intrigue is connected to its legend and actual origin. The reverse of the most recent Gold Elephant coins includes the legend Somali Republic, along with a Somali coat of arms device and 1,000 shillings denomination. These coins are, however, minted by the Bavarian State Mint in Germany and may only be purchased through authorized dealers, including APMEX. Said to be the oldest company in Munich, the Bavarian State Mint began producing coins in 1158. Known locally as Das Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt Mint, it is recognized for maintaining the highest standards in manufacturing.

Gold Elephant coin’s controversial history

In 1999, the Bavarian State Mint first manufactured Gold Elephant coins in the African Wildlife series under the legend of Zambia, a landlocked country in Southern Africa. In 2004, the Bavarian State Mint claimed to have gained authorization to transfer the series’ legend to the Somali Republic, a coastal nation on the Horn of Africa.

Some experts, however, have cast doubt on whether the mint’s authorization is sufficiently documented. By all accounts, Somalia has never recognized Gold Elephant coins as legal tender and the coins are not distributed by the Central Bank of Somalia. Confusion regarding authorization is largely the consequence of political turmoil. Amid ongoing civil war and battling factions, Somalia remains in the process of building a federal parliamentary republic.

Despite unrest and uncertainty, the Bavarian State Mint has developed a beautiful coin series in Somalia’s name.

Buying Gold Elephant coins through APMEX

Gold Elephant coins are widely recognized as a valuable addition to any bullion collection or investment portfolio. In fact, some experts suggest that ambiguity of Somali authorization enhances the coins’ potential for increased value.

Investors recognize that regardless of the coin’s legend, its .9999 Gold purity is indisputably valuable.

APMEX carries a range of African Wildlife Gold Elephant designs in its inventory. Coins include the 2016 Gold Elephant, featuring a single elephant with trunk extended and intricate detailed relief on the animal’s rumpled ears and skin. APMEX also carries the 2015 Gold Elephant, which illustrates a parent elephant and calf walking before a dramatic landscape of birds and trees.
