90%, 40% & 35% Silver
Silver Coins - 90% Silver coins were the basis for our currency for hundreds of years until 1965 when the price of Silver started increasing and approaching its monetary value and the government replaced our trusted Silver coin with a coin made of worthless metal! Shortly thereafter, the American public started hoarding these older Silver coins. Since then, these original Silver coins have become more scarce and more desirable.
Produced by the United States from mid-1942 to 1945, war nickels were made from 56% copper, 35% Silver, and 9% manganese. By saving the nickel metal, the government was able to use that metal for the production of military supplies during World War II. Unlike regular nickels, the war nickels have a slightly different coloration and a mint mark that appears above Monticello on the coin's reverse. In 1965, at the direction of Congress, when the U.S. Mint removed all Silver from dimes and quarters, the Silver content in half-dollars was reduced to 40%.
