Royal Canadian Mint Platinum
Royal Canadian Mint Platinum Coins - One of the major Platinum bullion coins, the Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf has long been the standard Platinum coin in Platinum trading for decades. First minted in 1988, the Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf is produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. During its mintage between 1988 and 2001, the Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf was available in 1 oz and many fractional sizes. In 2009, the Royal Canadian Mint reintroduced the Platinum Maple Leaf coin in only the 1 oz size. Legal Canadian tender, the Platinum Maple Leaf is .9995 fine Platinum and has a face value of $50 CAD. Following the release of the Platinum American Eagle in 1988, the Platinum Maple Leafs have become increasingly popular.
The year the Platinum Canadian Maple Leaf was released, Canada ranked third in Platinum production behind South Africa and the Soviet Union. Just a month after the Platinum Maple Leaf was available for sale, Ford Motor Company announced it was testing a new material for catalytic converters, causing the price of Platinum to drop. Fears mounted that these Canadian Platinum coins would experience a drop in sales, but sales were brisk, doubling from 1990 to 1991 due to the lower prices of Platinum. When the price of Platinum went up, sales of these Platinum coins tapered off, causing the Royal Canadian Mint to stop production after 2002, returning in 2009 and claiming the title of “world’s best-selling Platinum coin” in 2012.
The Platinum Canadian Maple Leaf features an iconic design: On the reverse of the Platinum Maple Leaf is a large, single maple leaf with the weight and fineness listed. On the obverse of the Platinum Maple Leaf is the Ian Rank-Broadley profile of Queen Elizabeth II, along with the year and $50 CAD face value. Since 2015, Platinum coins from the Canadian Mint now have extra security features, including a micro-engraved maple leaf privy mark which shows the last two digits of the production year when viewed under magnification. These Canadian Platinum coins also feature a radial line background, precisely machined by the Royal Canadian Mint to create a unique light diffracting pattern, adding yet another level of security.
