Morgan Dollars were considered rare in 1962, when a cache of these Silver coins was found in a vault at the Philadelphia Mint. This discovery started a rush to exchange Silver certificates for Morgan Silver Dollars and Peace Dollars. People were lined up at the Washington D.C. Treasury building, some even bringing wheelbarrows to haul off the Silver coins. By 1964, U.S. citizens could no longer exchange certificates for Morgan Silver Dollars and other Silver coins. The U.S. government decided to sell the remaining Silver coins, taking in $107 million from 1972 to 1980.
