High Relief Coins of the U.S Mint
United States Mint High Relief Gold & Silver - What is the most beautiful U.S. coin ever made? When this question is asked, one of the first and most frequent answers is the 1907 high relief double eagle sculpted by Augustus Saint Gaudens. Since this was a new and challenging design for the U.S. Mint, the 1907 high relief was struck a minimum of three-to-five times to give the coin a fully struck appearance. As a result of this process, most of the coins have a very satiny texture and often display raised die swirls in the fields. Due to this coins unique collector value and beauty, many examples have been saved and preserved in uncirculated condition.
In 2009, the U.S. Mint created a new Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold coin to fulfill Augustus Saint Gaudens' original vision in 1907. The U.S. mint could not fulfill his original vision due to technology restrictions during that time. The 2009 ultra high relief is struck with 1 oz of .9999 fine Gold and carries the $20 denomination as issued on the 1907 High Relief. Due to its beautiful design and popularity this coin was a nominee for the best gold coin award in 2011.
The U.S. Mint issued a high relief Silver dollar in the 20th century as well. On December 28, 1921, the Peace Dollar design was released to commemorate the peace following World War I. The 1921 Peace Dollar was only issued for four days resulting in a low mintage of only 1,006,473 pieces (1921 Morgan Dollars were used for the vast majority of the calendar year). In celebration, the 1921 Peace Dollar was struck with the high relief design, however this created issues at the mint and resulted in a high percentage of weakly struck coins (estimated 90%).
