Executive Vice President, Business Development
Paul Montgomery is a 30 year veteran metals trader and professional numismatist.
He has transacted or supervised more than $5 billion in precious metals and numismatic
business. Named Executive Vice President in August 2010, Montgomery has contributed
to many aspects of APMEX operations including: business development, purchasing,
merchandising, marketing and sales. Mr. Montgomery currently heads the APMEX purchasing,
sales and business development operations and is our executive sponsor for the newly
launched APMEX Bullion Center on eBay.
Mr. Montgomery’s professional experience includes:
- Owner and operator of the nation’s only full-time, industry-specific consulting
firm, Paul Montgomery and Associates. Significant representations included the FTC,
the SEC, the ANA, the Stanford Financial Receivership and various state attorneys
general.
- President and CEO of Bowers and Merena Galleries, where he managed all aspects of
one of the world’s preeminent auction houses as it transitioned from founding ownership
to its current ownership group.
- President, CEO and owner of Jefferson Coin and Bullion of New Orleans — one of the
nation’s most trusted sources for precious metals and rare coins — founded by noted
collector and gold guru James U. Blanchard III.
- Cultivated a large and active network of thousands of independent dealers worldwide
providing liquidity and a strong, active and transparent two-way market for thousands
of precious metal products.
A lifetime member of the American Numismatic Association (ANA), Montgomery was honored
by the president of the ANA in 2008 for his dedication and service to the precious
metals and numismatic community with the ANA Presidents Award. Mr. Montgomery is
also the immediate past president of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG),
an industry group formed to establish and maintain high standards and serve as the
ethical guardian for the numismatic trade. In 2001, Montgomery was awarded the coveted
Sol Kaplan Award. This award, jointly presented by the PNG and the Lewis M. Reagan
Foundation, recognizes those who work to rid the profession of fraud and thievery,
and for upholding the PNG’s ethical standards. In 2011, Montgomery received the
Abe Kosoff Founders Award, the highest honor in the precious metals and numismatic
trade for his enthusiastic leadership and steadfast dedication to the entire precious
metals and numismatic community. He is also a past chairman of the board and still
serves on the board of the Industry Council for Tangible Assets (ICTA), the legislative
watchdog and lobbyist for the hobby and industry.
A respected editor and author of award-winning publications and books, Montgomery
co-authored the book “Million Dollar Nickels: Mysteries of the Illicit 1913 Liberty
Head Nickels Revealed,” which was honored by the Numismatic Literary Guild for Extraordinary
Merit in 2006.
