Executive Vice President, Purchasing and Merchandising
Paul Montgomery has more than 25 years of experience as a professional numismatist,
and has transacted or supervised more than three billion dollars in precious metals
and numismatic business. He has been Executive Vice President, Purchasing and Merchandising,
at APMEX Inc., since August, 2010. Mr. Montgomery is responsible for all aspects of the
APMEX purchasing and merchandising operations, including wholesale and retail purchasing,
receiving, product management and site merchandising.
Mr. Montgomery’s professional experience includes:
- Owner and operator of the nation’s only full-time, industry-specific consulting
firm, Paul Montgomery and Associates. Significant representations included the FTC,
the SEC, the ANA, the Stanford Financial Receivership and various state attorneys
general.
- President and CEO of Bowers and Merena Galleries, where he managed all aspects of
one of the world’s preeminent auction houses as it transitioned from founding ownership
to its current ownership group.
- President, CEO and owner of Jefferson Coin and Bullion of New Orleans — one of the
nation’s most trusted sources for precious metals and rare coins — founded by noted
collector and gold guru James U. Blanchard III.
- Cultivated a large and active network of thousands of independent dealers providing
liquidity and a strong, active two-way market for thousands of precious metal products.
A lifetime member of the American Numismatic Association (ANA), Mr. Montgomery is
also the immediate past president of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG),
an industry group formed to establish and maintain high standards and serve as the
ethical guardian for the numismatic trade. He is also a past chairman of the board
and still serves on the board of the Industry Council for Tangible Assets (ICTA),
the legislative watchdog and lobbyist for the hobby and industry.
A respected editor and author of award-winning publications and books, Montgomery
co-authored the book Million Dollar Nickels: Mysteries of the Illicit 1913 Liberty
Head Nickels Revealed, which was honored by the Numismatic Literary Guild for Extraordinary
Merit in 2006.
