The history of Gold American Eagles

The Gold American Eagle coin has a rich and colorful history. The modern coins are fashioned after the designs of renowned artist and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens which were used on the Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933. The redesign of the coin was issued by President Theodore Roosevelt after his desire for more beautiful American coinage. This led to the design recognized and revered today by many to be the most beautiful American coin ever minted. The obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty who represents victory. She is holding a torch to symbolize enlightenment and an olive branch to represent peace. She is backed by sunrays and the United States Capitol. The reverse of the coin feature a male and female bald eagle with their young to represent family, strength, and patriotism.

Coins minted from 1986 through 1991 are dated with Roman numerals whereas every 1 oz Gold American Eagle minted after 1992 is branded with Arabic numerals. These Gold bullion coins are available in multiple sizes including 1/10 troy oz, 1/4 troy oz, 1/2 troy oz and 1 troy oz. Each piece is identical in design save the markings on the reverse side of the coin that indicate its weight and face value.

In 1933, because of the Great Depression, the United States government made it illegal for citizens to hold monetary Gold. Citizens were required to sell their Gold certificates, coins, and bullion to the U.S. Treasury save a few exceptions including jewelry and numismatic coins. In 1975, private ownership of Gold was again made legal and in 1986, American mints began to make bullion coins. Pursuant to the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, these coins are made exclusively from American Gold.

The coin is minted at the West Point Mint in New York. The mint deals in large amounts of Precious Metals and is responsible for striking all proof and uncirculated American Eagles in Gold, Silver, and Platinum as well as all Gold commemorative coins.

Why invest in the 2017 1 oz Gold American Eagle?

The 2017 1 oz Gold American Eagle is iconic and collectible, but it also has strong bullion investment appeal. Although these American Eagle Gold coins have a higher premium over spot price of Gold than a Gold bar, investors like that the Gold Eagle coin has legal tender status and is internationally recognized. This Gold American Eagle coin contains 1 oz actual Gold weight and is a hard asset that can be sold and traded. Due to the Gold content, these Gold coins are also eligible for Precious Metals IRAs.

Know the value of Gold coins that can appeal to collectors and investors.

Gold coins with numismatic value are Gold coins that appeal specifically to collectors, who are looking for something rare, unique, historically significant or aesthetically pleasing. Collectors seek Gold coins like early 20th century American Double Eagle Gold coins or other prized Pre-1933 Gold coins like the Indian Gold Half Eagle. Conversely, investors seek out Gold coins like the 2017 1 oz Gold American Eagle focusing on raw Gold value. The beautiful design and historical value are a bonus, but not the main driver to purchase. This modern American Eagle Gold coin is the ideal Gold coin for investors because it is priced at an affordable premium above the Gold spot price and has high Gold content.

I wish I would have started investing in my 20s rather then in my 60s. The other day I took my 2 grandsons 8 & 9 years old, I had them put on the gloves I purchased from Apmex. We went through some of the collection letting them hold the coins. It gave us about a 1/2 hour of pure enjoyment. No computers involved! They looked at the coins with great questions from how much does this weigh to what is it made of? I'm looking forward receiving some of the new lunar series coins to show them. Spending quality time! Precious a win win situation. A shout out to Andrew from Apmex for your help.

Very pleased with my first experience

By  RK

I wanted to get some gold and bought Golden Eagles when spot was fairly low. I was worried about having the sale price go up before delivery (as has happened when I placed stock orders) but was pleased to see that the price was locked in at the moment of purchase. This was also explained by the staff person for my security. Coins came quickly and were securely delivered. Excellent transaction.

Add 2017 1 oz Gold American Eagle coins to a Precious Metals IRA.

Many investors add 2017 1 oz Gold American Eagle coins to their Precious Metals IRA. To add these Gold coins to an IRA, you will first need to set up a custodian, which APMEX can help you do. Then, buy these Gold coins and other qualifying Precious Metals, which will be shipped directly to your account. Gold coins must be .995 fine to qualify for IRAs, with the exception of Gold American Eagles. Once your Gold coins and other Precious Metals are in an IRA, any profit is not taxed just like with other IRAs, but when you are ready to remove assets, you will want to consult your tax adviser about any taxes owed.
