The Maple Leaf has been a national symbol of Canada since the 18th century. The 2017 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf features a form of security though the Royal Canadian Mint’s Bullion DNA program. The Bullion DNA program offers the highest security on the market for any bullion coin. Each bullion coin features a textured maple leaf security privy mark, micro-engraved with laser technology and is visible only under magnification. Etched within the maple leaf security mark are the two digits indicating the coin’s production year. Each micro-engraving is encoded, scanned and recorded at the mint for future authentication giving each coin their unique Bullion DNA.

Bullion DNA authenticates coins by scanning them with a Mint’s proprietary Bullion DNA reader verifying that the micro-engraved security mark is a match to the Royal Canadian Mint’s secure database. This process provides each Silver Maple Leaf coin with the highest security for any coin in the market place. The Royal Canadian Mint’s unique Bullion DNA program authenticates Silver Maple Leaf coins dated 2015 and later. APMEX is a recognized Bullion DNA dealer for trusted RCM products.

The Canadian 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf coin was first minted in 1988 following the success of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf that launched in 1979. Issued annually, this bullion coin is made from .9999 fine Silver, making it one of the finest bullion coins in the world. Although the Royal Canadian Mint produces other Silver bullion coins, the Silver Maple Leaf is by the far the most popular among collectors and investors alike.

Before the birth of the Royal Canadian Mint, every coin that was in circulation in Canada had to be produced at the Royal Mint in London or at the private Heaton Mint in Birmingham, England. So, in 1890, the Royal Canadian Mint was proposed and 18 years later on January 2, 1908 Canadian Governor General Lord Earl Gray struck the first domestically produced coin in Ottawa. Since then, the Royal Canadian Mint has been known for its exceptional quality, sophistication and innovation.

The Silver Maple Leaf has undergone some changes in its design, but overall, the main elements of this iconic Silver coin have remained the same. The obverse of the coin features the profile of Queen Elizabeth II while the reverse displays a maple leaf, an image closely associated with Canadian pride and nationalism. In 2014, a micro-engraved, textured maple leaf featuring the year of issue and a radial-line background were added to ensure the authenticity of the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf. In addition to the added security, these features also add to the beauty of each individual coin, as each pattern of radial lines is unique and creates a specific light-diffracting pattern.

Why invest in 2017 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf coins?

The Maple leaf coin made in Gold, Platinum, and Silver are the purest and now recently the best designed and at the same time, Beautiful! If anything would be a "con" but really the price to pay for such purity, that the coins, esp the gold Maple's can scratch and dent very easy so use case, flips or tubes! Another thing about Maple coins are that different designs or things like reverse proof go in making a even more amazing look and conductibility! The Maple leaf is the best looking, best designed, and purest coin and it is my favorite!

Pros

  • Attractive Design
  • Collectible (lower mintage)

Only have four of these and they are all very nice except a 2002 I bought some time ago which is very milky on one side (came that way). I'm putting together a tube so I will be buying more. APMEX always handles my orders without issue and the shipping is very fast. That's why I keep buying from them.

Awful packaging

By  Jy

All my previous orders have been fantastic- timely updates and delivery, securely packaged and item as described. The 2017 maples I ordered this time were dented and scratched, not at all as described. Horrible packaging as the plastic flips they come in all broke and I unwrapped pieces of exploded garbage. I hold Apmex to a higher standard than this.

Pros

  • Easy to Sell
  • Recognized Brand

Cons

  • Poor Condition

The worth of Silver coins is, in part, based on the many uses of Silver.

A 2017 1 oz Silver Maple leaf gets much of its value from Silver’s many industrial uses, starting with its use in photography in 1727. The metal in Silver coins is reasonably abundant in the earth, but its extraordinary ability to conduct heat and electricity, and its antimicrobial properties create a rising demand, outstripping the supply nearly every year since 1990. A Canadian Maple Leaf is more pure than most jewelry, another major use of Silver, because Silver is soft and needs to be alloyed with another metal for daily use. A 1 oz Silver bullion coin represents humanity’s enduring appreciation of Silver, both for its beauty and its usefulness.
