The history of 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf coins

Today, all 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf coins are produced by the Royal Canadian Mint in Canada. Buying Silver coins was very different in the 1800s, because for the first 50 years, from 1858 to 1908, all Canadian circulation coins were produced at the Royal Mint in London or a private mint in Birmingham, England, the Heaton Mint. Before Canadian coins could be produced on Canadian soil, a mint had to be constructed at the proposed site in Ottawa. After completion, Lord Grey and his wife Lady Grey activated the presses on Jan. 2, 1908, and the new mint began producing an array of Canadian coins, which eventually led to the production of Silver Canadian Leafs and other fine Canadian bullion.

Why invest in 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf coins?

The 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf is produced from a Precious Metal that has a long history because Silver is one of the first five metals humans discovered that were useful in everyday life. Buying Silver coins and the many other Silver products available at APMEX is easy, and the value of the Precious Metal has only increased as more and more uses have been discovered. The Silver Canadian Leaf is not the only Silver product popular in today’s market because demand for Silver in 2014 was a little over 1 billion ounces, according to the Silver Institute. These Canadian coins contain .9999 fine Silver, a Precious Metal that is used in everything from jewelry to medical and industrial products, and many Silver investors believe the value of Silver will only increase thanks to demand from emerging markets.

Choose 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf coins for your portfolio, and then increase your holdings with other coins.

After purchasing 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf coins, investors who want to diversify their portfolio can increase their Precious Metals holdings with other products available at APMEX. Buying Silver coins is easy with APMEX, which makes available a variety of Silver bullion, rounds and bars from mints across North America and around the world. Increase your collection with Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coins, and then add popular coins from mints across the continent such as Silver Eagles, Silver Dollars, America the Beautiful coins and a variety of commemorative coins from the U.S. Mint. Then add to your Canadian coins portfolio with Silver from the Native American Mint such as the Sioux Indian, Pennsylvania Iroquois and Idaho Blackfoot.

Multiple Scratches and Dings

By  Nick

New to investing / collecting. I knew I was buying a random year coin but I wasn't aware the amount of ware that meant. Both sides of the coin has multiple scratches. Some pretty deep. The ridges are scratched and at some points on the lip of the ridges there harsh gouges. All the other stuff I've bought has been tip top. This one was pretty disappointing.

Pros

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Attractive Design
  • Recognized Brand

Cons

  • Poor Condition

I frequently shop APMEX for silver products as hyperinflation insurance. Having had plenty of rounds and Constitutional silver (I don't think "junk" is more than jargon because it is not junk when your dollars fail), I decided to get a few of these Maple leafs. Part of this was in response to a contest being run at the time. When the coins came, there were all 6 dated 2015 and in mint condition. I was expecting mostly 2014 and 2015, so this was not out of line with expectations. Definitely, these coins are worth picking up. While they are not as appealing as some of the higher premium issues (with fancy coloring, to boot), they are definitely worth it. Premiums were within reason--not as low as with rounds or 100 oz bars, but lower than the "junk(??)" silver coins I had been buying. Of note, I also ordered (a separate order) two 2007's, and those were also in mint condition and recommended. Those came with higher premiums than more recent dates, so you will be getting less silver for your money with the 2007 and earlier. But, if you are going to make this a hobby as well as inflation insurance, it doesn't hurt to have them.

Pros

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Attractive Design
  • Mint Condition

I ordered just two. They are my first Maple Leafs, and I am quite pleased with their appearance! I received a 2013 and a 2014. I ordered on Thursday and received them on Saturday. Only my second order from APMEX, but I couldn't be more pleased with their packaging and quick shipping. I will continue to order from here.
