The History of U.S. Silver Eagles

Launched on November 24, 1986, the 1 oz Silver American Eagle now enjoys the distinction of being the most popular Silver bullion coin not just in the United States, but worldwide. The Silver American Eagle is in fact so highly sought by collectors and investors alike that in both 2014 and 2015, the U.S. Mint could not keep up with the demand and the coin world faced a shortage of this item.

The impetus behind the creation of the Silver American Eagle was the government’s realization that they wanted to liquidate some of the Silver from the Defense National Stockpile. Although states with large mining interests, as well as certain legislators, were opposed to the liquidation, in 1985 the Senate voted to allow the sale of Silver. Later in 2002, after it became apparent the stockpile of Silver would be depleted, an additional bill went through allowing the government to purchase Silver on the open market when it became necessary.
