Pre-1965 90% Silver coins, sometimes referred to as junk Silver or scrap Silver, are a great way to start your Silver investments. These Silver coins were pulled from circulation with the introduction of copper/nickel clad coins and the rising demand of Silver. The public saved them for their 90% Silver content as a rainy day fund they can fall back on.

BU or Circulated?

By  Sandbagger

Making one of my Monthly purchases with APMEX I wanted some 90% Silver dimes and first considered the circulated roll as they were NOT for collecting purposes. Upon comparing the price difference I decided to spend the extra $5+/- dollars and get the Brilliant Uncirculated roll. Although it's clear from the variety of years in the roll that these are coins gone through by collectors, it was still nice to see a coin of 50+yrs in NEW BU condition! There were only 2 or 3 coins that had color problems but the rest were as new as the day they were originally put in rolls from the Mint. As I said, I'm not a collector, I just thought it would be nice to own a few 90% Silver BU coins for just a few dollars more! I was also surprised to find one dime in the roll that was nearly flawless and from the very early '50's! This one I will keep to pass down to my Son so that one day future generations can look at a "NEW" 100yr old coin.... :)

Pros

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Attractive Design
  • Collectible (lower mintage)
  • Easy to Sell
  • Mint Condition

I liked getting these just in case I ever need a small amount of silver to trade or use for money, but the premium is high. I will continue to buy a small amount every year though to have a smaller denomination of silver in my possession.

Pros

  • Mint Condition
  • Recognized Brand

I was willing to pay the premium over spot for these because they`re a great way to aquire a large amount of small denomination silver, when it comes down to it you`re paying less than a buck 50 per coin, for perfect billiant uncirculated coins, 5 stars!

Pros

  • Attractive Design
  • Easy to Sell
  • Mint Condition
  • Recognized Brand

Overall these are a great buy. Especially if you plan to use silver for barter in an apocalyptic scenario, great way to minimize cost per transaction. Only bad thing was I found some post 64 dimes in the roll :(. I think they're from proof sets, but still silver.

Pros

  • Attractive Design
  • Easy to Sell
  • Mint Condition
  • Recognized Brand

SO-So Coins, good mix of dates

By  LB

The price for a roll of BU coins even if they were common dates seemed a good bet. But most of the coins that were at all salable had poor strikes. Many were just boring, some didn't seem BU at all. If your looking for attractive coins I wouldn't waste your money. I have no doubt that these dimes were somebodies rejects. There were a good mix of dates and mint marks.

Pros

  • Value (low premium over spot)

Cons

  • Common (higher mintage)
  • Poor Condition

I like them. Never opened the roll yet to get a chance to inspect them all, but the coins on the outer roll look to be in mint condition.
