This modern commemorative coin was issued to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. The Smithsonian has been referred to as "America's attic" as it holds many icons and treasures of our nation's past.
The obverse design by Alfred Maletsky features a bust of James Smithson, the scientist whose will initially funded the museum. The reverse shows the sunburst logo of the Smithsonian. This coin is graded Mint State 69 by PCGS.
