This coin commemorates the 250th anniversary of Chief Justice John Marshall's birth. On the obverse is a portrait of Marshall by John Mercanti, adapted from a painting made in March1808 by Charles-Balthazar-Julien Fevret de Saint-Memin, of France. Reverse - The old Supreme Court Chamber within the Capitol. Designed by Donna Weaver. Chief Justice John Marshall, who served 34 years in that post in the U.S. Supreme Court , was the subject for a commemorative Silver dollar in 2005. Sworn in on February 4,1801, he was the fourth chief justice. His decisions are rembered as fair and just. Many of them help define the limits of power of the executive and legislative branches in an era in which the provisions of the Constitution were frequently tested.
