The history of pre-1965 Silver coins

Prior to 1965, U.S. Silver coins such as dimes, quarters and half dollars were composed of .900 fine Silver; however, their composition changed as a result of the Coinage Act of 1965. Silver prices were on the rise at this time in history, and the U.S. Mint’s supply of Silver was low, creating the need for the act. As a result, quarters and dimes no longer contain any Silver, but are instead composed of layers of Copper-Nickel and pure Copper, and Silver half dollars were reduced to 40% Silver. Coin bags of pre-1965 Silver half dollars, Silver quarters or Silver dimes are known as junk Silver even though they are very valuable because of their Silver content.

Why invest in pre-1965 Silver coins?

Buy Silver coins with a low premium over the Silver spot price with these coin bags of 90% Silver coins. Pre-1965 Silver coins add stability to investment portfolios at a price point that savvy investors appreciate, and these Silver coins have the added benefit of being U.S. legal tender coins with a face value. Unlike traditional investments, Silver coins tend to retain their purchasing power when the economy falters and the dollar weakens. Buy Silver by the coin bag to diversify your Precious Metals portfolio, or save it for a “rainy day.”

Buy Silver coins for an investment in a Precious Metal considered valuable for thousands of years.

Silver, as used in Silver coins, was first mined in 4000 B.C. in the region now part of Turkey, and craftsman throughout Asia Minor considered Silver a valuable resource at the time. The introduction of Silver bullion as currency occurred around 700 B.C., and the Precious Metal has been used as currency in most cultures since ancient times. The metal used for Silver coins was also considered valuable for its many uses for everything from jewelry to houseware. Buy Silver coins, and you are buying a Precious Metal that has intrinsic value, and has stood the test of time.

Arrived on schedule. Count was exactly 1000 coins. Surprise was the number of Mercury dimes. I had 150 Mercs in the batch. A few were in AU condition, and one 1916. Of the 150 mercury dimes, 5 dated teens, rest are a mix of 20's, 30's and 40's. Many are in great condition. Of the 850 Roosevelts, many were in AU condition. Great Value.

I bought 3 of these bags and requested dimes and was very happy to get them. After counting a couple of times the total was short 4 dimes, had 8 non silver and 1 that was corroded and unrecognizable as a dime. I called apmex and they are sending 13 replacements that should be here tomorrow. very fast and excellent customer service. I do recommend a thoroughly counting if you purchase.

Back in Roman days, the highest paid person in that civilization was the roman soldier. Each soldier received a dime of silver (1/10 of an ounce) as a day's wage. When silver gets back to it's mean, i expect 1 dime of silver to be worth the same... a day's wage. I am encouraging everyone to save 3 ounces of silver for each month of life you predict you will have left. I am 40 i expect to live till 90. 3 ounces X 12 months X 50 years = 1800 ounces.... I am only half way their, but thanks to Apmex service and great pricing, i see myself getting there alot sooner than most. Thanks Apmex!

I made a request as to which 90% silver coins I would prefer and APMEX made it happen. For the price, ease of ordering and the completion of my request I give APMEX 4 stars. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was because my order was two coins short but my previous order was one coin heavy. All in all I'm a satisfied customer.

I am a new investor of pm's and I remember having a jar of pre 64 silver coins saved up when I was a kid. This was a really fun first investment, and I would say this is currently the best way to get a hold of fractional silver. You never know when it might come in handy! Here are the results of my $100 face quarters bag: Washington - 107 64's, 12 63's, 11 62's, 10 61's, 11 60's, 13 59's, 8 58's, 12 57's, 10 56's, 0 55's, 15 54's, 10 53's, 11 52's, 5 51's, 6 50's, 3 49's, 6 48's, 6 47's, 8 46's, 12 45's, 18 44's, 24 43's, 18 42's, 11 41's, 8 40's, 7 39's, 1 38, 4 37's, 5 36's, 3 35's, 8 34's, 0 33's, 3 32's, 0 31's, 0 30' ... 388 total. Standing Liberty - 1 1929 and 11 with no readable dates...12 total. Total Weight - 2,475g or 79.57 oz (Total Ag - 71.62oz)

PRE 1965 U.S. MINT 90% SILVER COINS IS MY FAVORITE WAY TO ADD SILVER OZS. A LOT OF PROS AND FEW CONS. WITH SILVER TRADING AT 17.25 AN OUNCE (10-1-2014) IT'S A NO-BRAINER. PRIMARY SILVER MINERS HAVE A HARD TIME PRODUCING IT FOR UNDER $23.00 U.S. I SUSPECT BEFORE THE NEW YEAR 2015 WE WILL SEE SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER PRICES, AFTER A TEMPORARY PULL BACK TO THE UPPER 15.00 TO 16.00 DOLLAR AN OUNCE RANGE. BY WINTER 2016 PEOPLE WILL WISH THEY WOULD HAVE TAKEN OUT SECOND AND THIRD MORTGAGES AND BOUGHT PRECIOUS METALS.

Pros

  • Small Denominations - Eas
  • From Us Mint - No Purit
  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Recognized Brand

Cons

  • None - Received As Advert

Buy Silver coins, and be prepared for economic downturns that affect stocks, bonds and the dollar.

Many buy Silver coins as a way to prepare for potential economic falters, and obtain peace of mind. Historically, Silver coin prices move independently of stocks and bonds, making these Silver bullion coins an ideal investment for hedging against downturns. Smaller weights of Silver as found in these coin bags are also currency so if ever needed, the Silver coins could be used to trade. As a result, these Silver coins commonly referred to as junk Silver are anything but junk. These Silver coins are worth their weight in Silver, which is much more than their face value.
