This commemorative Silver half dollar was minted to raise money for the Stone Mountain Memorial near Atlanta. The coin features a depiction of Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson as portrayed on the memorial.
Designed by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor behind Mount Rushmore, the Stone Mountain Memorial was conceived as a way to honor the Civil War and three Confederate leaders: President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee and General Stonewall Jackson, each shown with their favorite horse. The carving, which measures 3 acres, is the largest low relief sculpture in the world.
