The history of 1/10 oz American Gold Eagles

Collect 1/10 oz American Gold Eagles if you appreciate beautiful Gold coins based on the artwork of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. On the obverse of American Eagle Gold coins, the statuesque figure of Lady Liberty gives you a small glimpse into the kind of sculptor and artist Saint-Gaudens was. While the Gold Eagle coins’ Lady Liberty design was first on the $20 Gold Double Eagle, Saint-Gaudens is also known for creating many Civil War monuments in the United States. His influence on U.S. Mint coins can be seen in the coin design work of his student, Adolph A. Weinman, who created the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar.

Nice Purchase

I was not disappointed by the brilliance and excellent condition of this coin. The year I received was 2015 which is about what I expected. While the 1/10 is a small coin, it allows me to purchase a gold coin on a monthly basis. Which is right up my alley, since I am not sure that I would have the will power to set aside money for several months to buy a larger gold coin.

Pros

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Attractive Design
  • Easy to Sell
  • Recognized Brand

Why Eagles?

By  BoneShaker

I never could quite understand the attraction to these standing liberty/Eagle coins in ANY size. Visually, lady liberty's face is rather featureless and the coin is 22 karat gold (blended with copper). Why not spend the same or even less on a 24 karat Canadian Maple Leaf of the same size? I know that the design was intended to make the coin more durable to being handled, but since most people put them in plastic anyway, this logic doesn't make sense. -My two cents.

Pros

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Easy to Sell
  • Recognized Brand

Cons

  • Unattractive Design
  • Common (higher mintage)

Good deal, paper for gold

By  Smudge

These cost over $100 per 1/10 ounce and that is a fair price. Imagine living in 1930 and going into a bank with a $100 bill and leaving with 5 Double Eagles. That is just short of 5 ounces of gold. How's that unbacked paper money going?

Pros

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Attractive Design
  • Collectible (lower mintage)
  • Easy to Sell
  • Mint Condition

In retirement, I wanted to start building a portion of my investment portfolio in gold & silver as a hedge against fluctuations in the stock market. Coins like the American Gold Eagle seemed like a fun way of accomplishing this, and the 1989-P 1/10 oz Gold American Eagle (OGP) I ordered was a beautiful way to start.

1/10 oz American Gold Eagles have more in common with vintage English Gold coins than you know.

1/10 oz Gold Eagles are part of the series of American Gold Eagle coins that first went into production in 1986. American Eagle Gold coins represent the U.S. Mint’s return to producing Gold coins, with these featuring a higher Gold content than the Gold coins minted between 1795 and 1933. These Gold American Eagle coins contain “crown Gold,” which was first introduced by Henry VII in England as the standard for Gold coins in 1526. Today’s American Gold Eagle coins are created with this alloy of .9167 fine Gold and Copper.
