The history of Silver bullion

Silver bullion has been the basis of many monetary systems and was, for a long time, considered to be second in value only to Gold. The Silver bar would come later, but initially Silver, in the form of a Gold-Silver alloy coin, was used as money around 700 B.C. by the Lydians. Silver, like that found in this 5 oz Silver bar, continued to be a major player in currencies until the discovery of large deposits of Silver in the Americas in the 19th century which generated fear of a price drop in Silver and, in turn, currency, which led most to switch to the Gold standard by 1900. Silver bars are now the most affordable of the major investment Precious Metals: Platinum, Gold, Palladium and Silver.

Why invest in Silver bullion?

This 5 oz Silver bar gives you an attractive and efficient way to invest in .999 fine Silver bars, ideal for the investor focused primarily on raw Silver value but who is also drawn to classic design. These Silver bars feature a patriotic American eagle motif, adding a touch of beauty to bullion content. This Silver bar comes sealed in plastic to protect its finish and design. This Silver bullion, offered at a low premium over the Silver spot price, also features a deep-mirror proof-like finish.

The type of Silver bullion you buy should always be driven by your individual investment goals.

Whether you purchase Silver bars or Silver coins depends on your investment goals. Many investors buy Silver bars in as large a quantity as possible at that time. For some, Silver bar purchases will be 5 oz Silver bars and for others, 50 oz bars. Some will forego Silver bullion and focus on Silver coins because they are also taking into consideration numismatic collector value. They prefer Silver coins to a 5 oz Silver bar, because although they are paying a slightly higher premium over the Silver spot price, they have a coin that allows them to hold a little piece of history in their hands.

Perfect Silver Bar! I have heard about APMEX for years and finally decided to give it a try. What a great company. Totally hooked. The buying process was easy online, paying by check was also nice. This 5oz bar is my first purchase from APMEX and I'm very impressed with the quality of the product, competiveness of the price and speed of delivery. This is not the first time I have bought silver, but, as a small investor, it is the most satisfying. APMEX offers many options to invest even for us little guys.

Love these!

Looking to expand my silver holdings beyond coins and rounds. 5 oz is a GREAT starting point, small enough for the average collector to buy yet large enough to have some heft to it. Fits perfectly in Air-Tites, great for stacking! I have 10 so far, I'd rate 9 of them as being perfect, 1 had a slight blemish but still very good!

Pros

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Attractive Design
  • Mint Condition

Quality Bar

By  diggingupward

I was looking for some 5oz bars and the APMEX bar had the best value compared to the other ones in that category. There's nothing that stands out on this bar, but it isn't an ugly/bad design either. The bars have a professional build and quality finish to them. Just to have silver bars, these are a great addition.

Pros

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Recognized Brand

Cons

  • Unattractive Design

Damaged around rear perimeter

By  lurker

from NC

3.0

I, as others, received bars that were damaged on the rear to the extent that I initially thought I'd received secondary market bars. Upon reading the reviews, I noticed it's a known problem with this 5 oz bar. I don't like to write reviews and take others' reviews with a grain of salt, but they were accurate in this instance. The face is beautiful and the bar is a good value, but I will not be buying more.

Pros

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Recognized Brand

Cons

  • Poor Condition

Nice big hunk of silver

By  Phil

Nice starter silver for a collection. The apex 5 oz does fit in the 5 oz air tite capsule perfectly. Only bad thing about the apex silver is that there is no serial number and the web site is plastered across the bar.

Pros

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Easy to Sell
  • Recognized Brand

Buy Silver and hold Precious Metals at a lower price point than Platinum, Gold or Palladium.

Silver bullion is priced lower than Gold bullion due to perception, demand and rarity (although some people would debate whether Gold is rarer than Silver). The current price of a Silver bar is about 70 times less than Gold bar prices, with some experts positing that the ratio should be 17 to 1. The lower price of Silver bars versus Gold bars can also be attributed to the fact that Gold is more difficult to mine and requires a purification process. Buying Silver, like this 5 oz bar of Silver, allows investors to get in Precious Metals at a lower price point.
