The 1949 Mexican Libertad (Onza) became the first silver bullion coin to be minted in a one-ounce size. Originally called Onzas, these coins were legal tender, as they are labled PESO above the balance scale, and many of them did see circulation. These first year silver bullion coins are always in demand by bullion investors and collectors due to their one-year type status and limited mintage (only 1 million were struck).
