Silver Denarius of the emperor Caracalla A.D. 198 - 217 (19mm 2.0g). The obverse features the emperor's right facing bust, surrounded by "ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT." The reverse has the words "P M TR P XVI COS IIII P P" and shows Hercules standing left holding a branch and club. This example is graded Choice Extra Fine by NGC.
Caracalla's real name was Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. Caracalla was a nickname derived from a hood cloak of Gallic origin that was his favorite form of dress.
