The history of American Eagle Platinum coins

The obverse of 1 oz Platinum American Eagles all have the same Statue of Liberty design created in 1997 by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti. The proof Platinum coins change the design on the reverse every year, while the non-proof version maintains the same design. The 2005 American Eagle proof coin has a bald eagle perched on a heraldic shield with symbols of America’s strength and beauty, while the bullion coins have a soaring eagle over a rising sun. The Platinum bullion design on the reverse was created by Thomas D. Rogers and the 2005 proof reverse was created by Donna Weaver, who also did the engraving for the previous year.

Why invest in Platinum coins?

The 1 oz Platinum American Eagles have a face value of $100, the largest face value of any U.S. coin. The Platinum coins are worth much more, though, because of the high price of Platinum per troy ounce. The 2005 American Eagle has a legal tender face value because that shows it is guaranteed by the U.S. government for quality and weight, and the American Eagle is the only Platinum coin produced by the U.S. Mint. If you want Platinum bullion to diversify your investments, 1 oz Platinum American Eagles offer that extra peace of mind that comes with U.S. Mint products.
