Pre-1965 90% Silver coins, sometimes referred to as junk Silver or scrap Silver, are a great way to start your Silver investments. These Silver coins were pulled from circulation with the introduction of copper/nickel clad coins and the rising demand of Silver. The public saved them for their 90% Silver content as a rainy day fund they can fall back on.

good mix of dates

By  Bill

from Eugene Oregon

I just received a roll of the XF Mercury dimes. Most of them looked like they would grade XF to me but there were several with worn dates that were hard to read. There was a good mix of mint marks. I had three coins each from 1937 & 1939, with the real prize being a 1919 P.

Better than average circulated

I bought a roll of XF and a roll of average circulated - all the XF coins have all the detail visible, whereas the average circulated coins are usually more worn down with some detail absent. I think the XF coins are worth the extra cost over the average circulated.

Condition of the purchased coins was not extra fine in my opinion, with the majority of the coins more like average circulated. I showed the coins to a dealer in my area who shared my opinion. I had requested plastic tubes, and APMEX was gracious enough to honor my request. Customer service is hit or miss depending upon who answers the phone.

Over 1/2 of coins were not extra fine.

I have an affliction for Mercury Dimes, and after some fishing around, I was interested in this Extra Fine roll. The display picture really reeled me in. I had assumed the dimes would be similar to the way they look in the pictures, but they were not. 34 of the 50 dimes were definitely average circulated. Sticks and chassis were obliterated on those 34 coins. All of them were tarnished, which I am OK with. The other 16 were along the lines of extra fine, or similar to the EF display picture on Apmex. What I did like was the mix of dates and mint marks. I got a nice variety of P and S, and one D. About 8 or 9 were from the 30's, with the earliest being 1936. All in all, I can't say that I'm angry or not satisfied, but I will be spending the extra money for the AU rolls and hope for some better-conditioned coins.
