Byzantine gold over 1500 years old!
After the fall of the Roman government in the west, the eastern part of the empire became known as The Byzantine Empire, after the ancient Greek city of Byzantium where the capital would be located, although Eastern Roman was a name that carried on for some time. This Gold Solidus was struck during the reign of emperor Leo I (457 - 474 AD). Approximate specifications are: (21mm, 4.5g). Leo was a capable ruler, but his aid to the Western Roman Empire in an attempt to recover lost territory brought turmoil to the empire later on.
