Product Description
Graded Roman Silver coin!
This Silver Denarius was struck during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus (A.D. 193 - 211). The obverse features a right facing bust of Septimius Severus. The reverse shows two captives seated back to back at the foot of a trophy. NGC has graded this example as choice Very Fine!
During his reign, Septimius Severus increased the pay of his soldiers from 375 to 500 denarii per year. He fell fatally ill while on a campaign against the Scots in northern Britain, and on his death bed advised his two sons to "keep on good terms with each other, be generous with the soldiers, and take no heed of anyone else."
