The ANCESTOR to the modern-day Krugerrand, but much more scarce! This is a 1960 South African Gold Medal. It celebrates the Golden Jubilee (1910 - 1960) of the Transvaal and Orange Free State Chamber of Mines.
It is made of .996 Fine Gold and weighs 1 Troy Ounce.
There is a beautiful depiction of a pair of springbok antelope grazing on one side and a modern tower building representing the Chamber of Mines on the reverse. This medal was made by the Chamber of Mines which currently issues the present day Krugerrand. This particular medal is in Afrikaans. A companion medal has the exact same depictions, size and weight, but the legends are in English.
